Primer

Primer

You may have the necessary tools and be ready to dive into your DIY painting project, but have you adequately primed the surface you’ll be coating? If you think primer isn’t necessary, you’re certainly not alone. Many people are confident they won’t need to prime the wall, and most regret this. John Paul’s Paint and Decor carries premium Benjamin Moore primer, and we’re here to help you choose the perfect one for your job.

Primers from Benjamin Moore

Benjamin Moore primers have been setting the industry standard for quality and reliability for decades.

Fresh Start® Primers

  • Fresh Start® High-Hiding All Purpose Primer: An acrylic formula for interior and exterior use. The maximum hide factor makes it ideal for drastic color changes.
  • Fresh Start® Undercoater & Primer/Sealer: This interior alkyd formula flows and levels easily. It provides exceptional adhesion and can be sanded two short hours after application. Fresh Start® Undercoater Primer & Sealer is an excellent choice for blocking stains and achieving smooth results on various surfaces.
  • Fresh Start® All-Purpose Primer: A low-VOC alkyd primer, Fresh Start® All-Purpose Primer works great on interior and exterior surfaces. It offers superior tannin blocking and a four-hour waiting time between the first and second coats.
  • Fresh Start® Deck & Siding Primer: Fresh Start® Deck & Siding Primer is an excellent solution for new and weathered exterior wood. The alkyd formula suppresses tannins and is quick drying.

  • Stix® Waterborne Bonding Primer: When you have a hard-to-cover surface, Stix® Waterborne Bonding Primer is the best paint primer to reach for. The acrylic-urethane formula offers unmatched adhesion on glossy coats, vinyl, plastic, glass, and other complicated surfaces. It cures to a tough film, even in cold temperatures as low as 35 degrees F.
  • Reduced Odor Oil-Based Primer: This primer uses a synthetic solvent that produces less odor than other alkyd primers. It offers complete coverage of smoke and water stains and is dry to the touch less than an hour after application.
  • High Build Peel Bonding Primer: Some surfaces are more complicated to cover than others. This water-based acrylic primer is a problem-solver in a can if you’re painting a surface with existing paint that is peeling, cracking, or chalking. It smooths peeling paint and prevents future peeling while remaining flexible enough to handle outdoor temperature fluctuations.

Professional Primers

More experienced painters will appreciate the versatility and quality of Benjamin Moore professional primers.

  • Multi-Purpose Primer: A spatter-resistant acrylic formula that is quick drying and low-VOC.
  • Fast-Sanding Primer: When time is of the essence, fast-sanding primer is a dream come true. The acrylic formula sands to a smooth powder one hour after application and has exceptional sealing and holdout.
  • Drywall Primer: A quick-drying acrylic latex formula with a high hide that is great for new or previously painted drywall.

When To Use Primers

Priming is not always necessary, but it is highly recommended. If you doubt the paint-ability of a surface, it’s best to use a primer. Primers create a stable surface for the paint to adhere correctly. Porous surfaces that are not properly primed will require several coats of color to achieve full coverage. Walls that have been skim-coated and unfinished wood are exceptionally porous. On the flip side, a finish that is too glossy is also not ideal. A surface that is too smooth will prevent paint from adhering as it should.

If you’ll be covering stains or other blemishes, it’s wise to use a primer. The transition between a dark color and a significantly lighter shade is also made easier with primers. You may think your paint has covered the existing color or water stain until it dries fully and the old color or water spot is visible through the paint.

Properly Priming

Repair any cracks or dents in your wall using caulk and a putty knife to smooth the edges. Once the caulk is completely dry, gently rub the surface using 220-grit sandpaper. Remove any dust with a damp paper towel and dry the wall thoroughly before beginning to prime. It’s a good idea to lightly moisten your paint roller to help keep the primer on the surface of the roller instead of being absorbed into the material. Use a brush to cut in at the corners of the wall and cover any obvious blemishes before continuing to prime the entire wall. Once the primer has dried, another light sanding will provide you with a perfect surface for paint.
